Gehrig, Robinson Top Baseball
Memorable Moments
Recently, MasterCard and Major
League Baseball teamed up to sponsor a poll for the sport's
most memorable moments. Baseball fans worldwide were welcome
log onto MLB's Web site and choose their favorite moment in
history. When the polls closed, five of CMG's clients were honored
in the top 10.
Baseball's
original ironman Lou
Gehrig appeared twice on
the list, including in the No. 1 spot. Fans voted the touching
event when Gehrig's longstanding consecutive game streak was
broken by Cal Ripken, Jr. as baseball's No. 1 memory. Babe
Ruth found his way to second
place in another torch-passing moment, when Hank Aaron broke
the Sultan of Swat's homerun record in 1974. Just three spots
away, Gehrig's "luckiest man" farewell speech on July 4, 1939
was voted No. 5.
Jackie
Robinson appeared at number
three, proving his courage on April 15, 1947 has yet to be forgotten.
That day, the talented civil rights pioneer became the first
African-American to play in the major leagues when he stepped
out onto Ebbets Field with the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Fans also propelled their beloved "Charlie Hustle" to the top.
In at No. 6 was September 11, 1985, when Pete
Rose broke the legendary
Ty
Cobb's all-time career
hits record with 4,192 (he eventually finished his career with
4,256).
To see the complete list of moments, please visit MLB's Web
site. A book and DVD capturing
these memorable moments, and many more, is also available for
purchase.
