Bill Elliott to celebrates 700th career start in
the Winston Cup series

Bill Elliott Active racing legend Bill Elliott has built one of the most distinguished records in NASCAR Winston Cup history. On March 16, 2003, at the Carolina Dodge Dealers 400 in North Carolina, the Evernham Motorsports driver added yet another accomplishment to his growing list of milestones - his 700th career start.

This moved Elliott to seventh on the list of all-time number of starts, passing Buddy Baker’s tally of 698. If he continues to start every race of the 2003 season, Elliott will surpass Bobby Allison to rank sixth on the all-time start list in the fall race at Michigan Int'l Speedway. Richard Petty heads the list of contenders with 1,177.

"I feel very fortunate to be where I am today,” said Elliott. “I've seen a lot of things throughout my career and I've won a few races along the way. I can't complain about anything…. I guess when you sit back and think about it though, it's something to hang your hat on. I've had a good career."

Despite wet conditions and a rough start, Elliott maneuvered his No. 9 Dodge Intrepid R/T to ninth place at the Darlington Raceway. This race also marked Elliott's 50th career start at Darlington. He leads all active drivers with five poles, 21 top-fives and 34 top-10s at the track. The commendable finish also brought Elliott’s total number of top-10 finishes to 308. In his 28 years of racing, Elliott has amassed 43 wins, 55 poles and 166 top-fives.

Veteran endeavors aren’t the only records he has been setting lately. Last year, Elliott consecutively captured both the Pennsylvania 500 and Brickyard 400, proving he is still a top contender on the Winston Cup scene. “These younger guys keep you on your toes,” said Elliott. “It makes it fun to go out there every week.”
