Statue to commemorate the “First Lady of Song”

Ella Fitzgerald A lady with a monumental voice, Ella Fitzgerald will soon have her own monument. The native Virginian jazz singer will be immortalized in a statue at the new upscale Richmond, Virginia shopping mall, the Short Pump Town Center. A $360 million project built on 147 acres, the elegant two-story building will contain various nods to Virginia’s history, from the historical brick architecture to the fountain with six pumps that pay tribute to the mall’s namesake. In keeping with the historic feel, the mall will contain statues of six important Virginians, including Ella. The design of her monument includes a life-sized statue of Ella atop a column with a plaque stating her achievements. In all, the monument will stand around 18 feet tall.

With over 2,000 songs recorded and 13 Grammy Awards to her credit, Ella Fitzgerald is without a doubt one of the most preeminent jazz artists in history. A tireless performer with a timeless voice, Ella’s career lasted for over six decades. Record sales of Ella's music throughout Europe and Asia still soar today as her legend is re-introduced to new fans in another generation.

Ella’s statue will be visible beginning at the time of the Short Pump Town Center’s Grand Opening on September 4, 2003. Visit the mall’s Web site at www.shortpumpmall.com for more information.
