National Centennial Celebration of Flight Kicks Off
at the Smithsonian

Amelia Earhart commemorative coin The national Centennial Celebration of Flight kicked off on December 17, 2002 with guests that included everyone from astronauts Neil Armstrong and Senator John Glenn to actor John Travolta. Other honored representatives included Amy Kleppner, niece of Amelia Earhart, and Erik Lindbergh, grandson of Charles Lindbergh. The U.S. Centennial of Flight Commission chose Travolta as master of ceremonies for the event, which was held at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum. It marked the beginning of a yearlong celebration honoring 100 years of powered flight. A complete listing of upcoming events across the country can be found on the government's Web site, www.centennialofflight.gov.

In light of this historical event,
C. Forbes Inc. and Smithsonian Business Ventures have utilized Amelia Earhart in a special collection of memorabilia. Earhart's likeness will grace both commemorative coins and label pins marked for the Centennial Anniversary of Flight. The items will be available for purchase in early 2003, with retail values that range from $7-$12.
