Fans Remember Marilyn Monroe on her 77th Birthday
Seventy-seven years after her birth, Marilyn
Monroe is still perhaps the most recognized woman in the world. From the moment Marilyn stepped in front of the camera, it was evident a star was born. With her smoldering looks and sizzling personality, she set hearts on fire as soon as she entered a room. Marilyn’s legend conjures up a plethora of images, all different, and yet somehow all fitting. She was a vivacious blonde, a talented actress, a sensual spirit and an irresistible beauty. Adored by millions of fans worldwide, Marilyn reached icon status quickly during her lifetime, and in the 40 years after her death her popularity has surged to even greater numbers.
On June 1, 2003, as we celebrate the 77th anniversary of Marilyn’s birth, there is no doubt that her flame burns brighter than ever. Marilyn Monroe has become the personification of beauty and stardom, the ultimate celebrity brand. It comes as no surprise that her undeniable appeal has translated into a multitude of successful worldwide promotional and merchandising programs.
"Marilyn is without a doubt the ultimate symbol of glamour. Her name and image have become a priceless brand, and companies worldwide no doubt understand the value that she adds to their campaigns and products," said Mark
Roesler, Chairman of CMG Worldwide, the agent for the Marilyn Monroe Estate.
In fact, Marilyn’s luminous face has graced promotional campaigns for commercial giants such as Mercedes Benz in the United States, Levi’s jeans in Japan, Chrysler in Germany and Nestle in the United Kingdom. In the coming weeks, Marilyn will greet millions in Russia as American Express launches a promotional print campaign spotlighting the star’s legendary beauty mark. Recently, VISA and Iberia Airlines also embraced the Marilyn Monroe brand, utilizing her captivating image for large-scale international promotions.
Marilyn’s allure not only translates to successful advertising campaigns, but also to a myriad of merchandise programs. To the delight of their customers, California based Nova Wines releases limited edition bottles of "Marilyn
Merlot" each year on her birthday. Not surprisingly, these bottles have become collector’s items, treasured by those who purchase them. To celebrate her 77th birthday on June 1, Nova will release their 17th Marilyn Merlot vintage, aged since 2001. Likewise, Franklin Mint enjoys success from their line of intricately detailed collectible dolls, which celebrate Marilyn’s memorable performances in films such as The Seven Year Itch, Some Like It Hot and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. The public’s desire for and adoration of Marilyn fuels campaigns like the limited edition pearl necklaces that Mikimoto released in the United States and Japan. Produced in memory of her, and designed after Marilyn’s own Mikimoto pearl necklace, these delicately beautiful pearls were a unique testimony to her everlasting appeal and marketing power.
Andy Warhol certainly recognized that Marilyn was "a star for all ages" when he immortalized her in his paintings. Elton John’s touching tribute song to Marilyn, "Candle in the Wind," introduced her to a new generation of fans. In these and many other ways, millions of people continue to idolize Marilyn and pay tribute to her legacy. Through her unforgettable films, and the multitude of Marilyn-inspired campaigns and products, advertisers, merchandisers and fans worldwide have united in her honor.
Today, as we reflect on the captivating life and timeless legacy of Marilyn Monroe, the lyrics from the chorus of "Candle in the Wind" could not ring more true.
"Your candle
burned out long before,
Your legend ever did…."
