Charles Atlas, Ltd. celebrates 75 years of total body fitness
Charles
Atlas’ story is a tale of the American Dream.
As a teenager, Atlas was a self-described “97-pound weakling” and was often picked on by bullies. Determined to take control of his life, Atlas pioneered a fitness technique he dubbed “dynamic tension.” By
the time he was 18 years old, Atlas had completely changed his physique.
As a result of his dedication to dynamic tension, he was able to maintain a superbly
fit body. In 1922, Charles Atlas won the "Most Perfectly Developed Man" contest
in Madison Square Garden. It was one of many awards and recognitions bestowed
on him. The dynamic tension program was hugely successful for those who followed
it, and Atlas earned a great deal of respect from fitness professionals across
the world.
As 2004 approaches, Charles Atlas, Ltd. is preparing
to celebrate it’s 75th Anniversary. Founded by Atlas in 1929, the company has maintained its commitment to total body health and fitness, and is thriving. In a era where many countries, especially the United States, struggle with the epidemic of obesity, Charles Atlas’ and
dynamic tension are more newsworthy than ever.
Recent press highlighting his accomplishments and the dynamic tension program
appeared in Muscle Media Magazine, Fortune Small Business Magazine and The New
York Times, as well as television features on the Discovery Channel, Ripley’s Believe it or Not, and A&E’s
Biography network. Additionally, Charles Atlas can be seen in a number of successful
advertisements. Major corporations such as IBM, The GAP and Hallmark have seen
the value of utilizing his fit image and positive influence in their promotional
campaigns.
