Tennessee Ernie Ford At the 2003 Annual Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) posthumously presented the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award to Ernie Ford. His son, Buck Ford, was in attendance and accepted the honor on behalf of his father.

Held the evening of August 14 at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel, the 2003 Awards Dinner was hosted by Nashville Local President Ce Ce DuBois and Executive Director Randy Himes. More than 600 AFTRA members from around the country attended the event, including National AFTRA President John Connolly, and notables George Lindsey, Morgan Fairchild, Dobie Gray, Jim and Jon Hager, author Carol Anderson, and many more.

A talented entertainer, Tennessee Ernie Ford was a renowned recording artist, as well as a popular radio and television personality. His smooth voice helped his records to sell 60 million copies, 40 million of which were gospel music. Perhaps his most famous hit was the 1955 classic “Sixteen Tons,” which was the fastest-selling single in the history of Capitol Records at the time. Ford also hosted his own television show, The Ford Show, on which he sang, acted and interviewed celebrity guests from 1956 to 1961. More than 11 years after his death, Ford remains one of America’s most beloved entertainers.
