Vince Lombardi Trophy awarded to Super Bowl XXXVIII champs

Vince Lombardi trophy Vince Lombardi’s legacy of perseverance, hard work and dedication helped to make him one of the most admired and well respected coaches in the history of the game. In recognition of his lifetime achievements, the National Football League posthumously renamed their most prestigious award the “Vince Lombardi Super Bowl Trophy.”

On Sunday, February 1, the New England Patriots squared-off against the Carolina Panthers and captured the 38th annual Super Bowl championship. The Patriots were presented with the 2003 season’s Vince Lombardi Super Bowl Trophy at a ceremony immediately following the game. This trophy is handcrafted by Tiffany & Co. and valued at $12,500. It is made entirely of sterling silver and depicts a football set in the kicking position. The trophy stands 22 inches tall, weighs seven pounds and takes 72 man-hours to create.

Vince Lombardi led the Green Bay Packers to victory in five National Football League Championships and the first two Super Bowls. In January of 1970, his professional coaching record was unmarred by a losing season and stood at a remarkable 105-35-6. The NFL recognized Lombardi by naming him "1960s Man of the Decade," and 40 years later in 2000, ESPN named him “Coach of the Century.”
