I was born in Brockton, Massachusetts on September 1, 1923. Initally I hoped to become a catcher in Major League baseball. However, in 1947 my baseball dreams were crushed by the Chicago Cubs and I turned to boxing. During my professional career I held the heavyweight boxing title for four years in the 1950s. To this day I am the only boxing champion to retire undefeated.
