Albert Pujols’ performance anticipated in 2004 season
After an outstanding performance last season, baseball’s Albert
Pujols was signed to a $100 million contract by the St. Louis Cardinals. Pujols’ numbers last season included a .359 batting average, 137 runs scored and a .667 slugging percentage. He was runner-up MVP to Barry Bonds in 2002 and 2003, despite being recognized as the 2003 Player of the Year by both the MLB players association and The Sporting News.
His undeniable talent on the field has led to 24-year-old Pujols being compared to baseball legend Joe
DiMaggio. Their similarities include an having a combination of high batting averages, power hitting and low strikeout totals so early in their careers.
Since signing the deal, Pujols has been less outspoken about the contract, and more focused on winning a World Series championship. “If you play for this team for 20 years and you don't win a championship, it doesn't matter how much money you make,” Pujols said. “But if you win a championship, everybody's going to recognize you. That's what it's about. It's about winning."
