Marilyn at 2005 Oscars?
Over five decades have passed since silver screen goddess Marilyn Monroe sauntered down the red carpet and into the Academy Awards Ceremony. On February 27, 2005 at the 77th Annual Academy Awards, Marilyn made an encore Oscar appearance… in
the form of Stuart Weitzman couture high heels. Regina King,
who played Margie Hendricks in the Academy Award nominated
film “Ray,” was the lucky actress chose to adorn the priceless footwear at Sunday’s ceremony.
Weitzman’s stunning, one-of-a-kind, custom made shoes were unveiled on Saturday at his annual pre-Oscar dinner party. Celebrities and media personnel alike gathered at Christies Auction House in Beverly Hills to get a first glimpse of Weitzman’s exquisite new design.
The shoes were taupe satin with 4 ½ “ stiletto heels with Marilyn’s crescent
shaped Swarovski crystal earrings placed near the toe. Loaned courtesy of Robert
W. Otto, renowned international collector and historical expert on Marilyn Monroe,
the earrings were the focal point of Weitzman’s exclusive Oscar design. The
fabulous, crescent-shaped clip-on's were one of Marilyn’s favorite pieces of
jewelry.
King was a wonderful choice to wear the irreplaceable shoes. She even helped Weitzman go through around 20 different styles of shoes before settling on the taupe heels. Weitzman also worked with King’s stylists to ensure everything matched beautifully.
Weitzman had to pay a $1 million insurance policy to ship the earrings from CMG Worldwide’s corporate headquarters in Indiana to his workshop in Los Angeles. After the awards ceremony, the earnings were shipped back to Indiana but Weitzman says he’ll make a replica pair for King to have as a keepsake.
This will be the fourth year Weitzman has created a pair of women’s shoes especially for the Oscar’s ceremony. King’s movie, “Ray,” received two Oscars, one for best leading actor and another for best editing of a comedy or musical film.
