Carmen Miranda shines at the Cité de la Musique
As a prominent cultural figure in
Brazilian history, Carmen
Miranda encapsulates the very essence of the rich
Brazilian heritage. She influenced the habits and customs of
people from
many generations
and countries. She quickly rose to icon status due to her incomparable
talents and unique style of dress. In light of her amazing
accomplishments, Carmen will be featured in a cultural exhibit
at the Cité de la Musique in Paris, France.
From March 17th until June 26th Carmen will be featured in an exhibition titled MPB, Musique Populaire Brésilienne (Popular Brazilian Music). Clips from “That Night in Rio,” "Copacabana" and "Scared Stiff” will be shown. In addition, rare photos that chronicle her triumphant rise to Hollywood will also be on display.
The Cité de la Musique is a place for communication and dialogue. Aimed at both adults and young people the center encourages learning of culture through its concerts, exhibitions, documentation centers and educational and publishing activities.
Every year France chooses a one specific foreign culture to highlight. This allows the selected country to show and share the many facets of its culture. This year France chose Brazil in a celebration of friendship and good intercontinental relations. The decision to feature the Brazilian culture was decided in 2001 during an official visit to Brazil by the French Prime-Minister.
